SECTION A

Question 1

Appraise in today’s world of trade and non-trade concerns, why issues in health, environment, and safety (HES) and sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) standards are rising again. Is China in particular, emerging as a challenge to the US after displacing Japan by GDP size contributory to this new international economic development?

(a) Discuss the policies of import substitution with that of export orientation.

(b) Which suits Singapore best and why?

Question 3

Demonstrate with a diagram, how the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), using a managed float exchange rate approach as in between a fixed exchange rate and a free-floating exchange rate system, suits Singapore’s nature as a small and open economy. Note that Singapore has a high marginal propensity to import (mpm) and the high marginal propensity to save (mps) to consider its policy for balance of payments.

Question 4

Illustrate what a financial crisis in theory is. How did Singapore fare in the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997 and the Global Financial Crisis in 2008 relative to its other ASEAN partners (you may pick any one of them for discussion)?
