In a survey of 2,000 people in eight countries, Singaporeans reported the second-highest stress levels. The findings were released in a report by the American Psychological Association (APA) on Thursday (March 8).

The report, Stress in America: Coping with Change, found that 68 per cent of respondents from Singapore cited work as a significant source of stress, while 67 per cent said money was a major stressor.

The survey also found that Singaporeans were more likely than people in other countries to say their stress levels had increased over the past year. Forty-six per cent of respondents from Singapore said their stress levels had risen in the past 12 months, compared to the global average of 36 per cent.

The APA report attributed the high stress levels in Singapore to the country’s “rapid economic development and social change”. It noted that Singaporeans often have to cope with long working hours, uncertain job security and a high cost of living.

A separate study by the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) found that stress levels among students in Singapore have also been on the rise.
