Question 1
Cultural appropriation (i.e., Beyoncé in a cliché-ridden Coldplay video) is different than appreciation (wearing a traditional sari at your South Asian friend’s wedding at their request). Slapping on a bindi to complete your look at a desert music festival crosses the line into appropriation.
Distinguish between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation by referencing (1) a real-life example (e.g., from a news source) and (2) a personal example in your response.
Examine how the two case studies that you identify and cite contain inherent barriers to effective intercultural understanding and discuss strategies to create awareness about cultural appropriation, based on the concepts and theories learned in this course.

Question 2
Singapore is home to a multicultural workforce. With over 750,000 foreign workers and over 7,000 multinational companies operating in Singapore, it is important to understand how different cultures perceive each other and work together, and to be cognizant of the “cultural minefield” that may exist in the workplace and even within the nation.
a) With reference to an organisation that operates within Singapore, describe and evaluate the impact of cultural diversity (e.g. in terms of race, ethnicity, age, gender, etc.) and assess its value in the workplace and for business. Give examples to support your position and refer to relevant literature. You may also draw from your personal experience if any.
b) Examine the benefits and challenges faced by an organisation with little to no cultural diversity compared to one that is very culturally diverse. You may compare within Singapore or between Singapore and another country of your choice.
c) Discuss how cultural diversity would need to be managed and/or negotiated in order for the organisation you have chosen to operate effectively. Some examples to consider are different communication styles, attitudes toward conflict, approach toward task completion, leadership and decision-making styles, teamwork and collaboration, use of language, etc. Apply relevant concepts and theories learned in the course.
