Subject | Operating Systems Assignment |
In this task, you need to demonstrate the creation and usage of virtual machine using Ubuntu OS. A game cards chain KongGames has purchased a server with 9 hard disks (each hard disk has a storage size of 3 TB). The server is pre-installed with Ubuntu OS, and it has an operational life of 3 years.
The requirements for the storage space are stated as follow:
- 3 TB is needed for the marketing department to store various marketing materials such as promotional videos to promote the game cards chain. Redundancy is needed such that no data can be lost.
- 2 TB is needed for the accounts department to store accounting information. Redundancy is very important, and the information must not be lost even if two hard disks fail at the same time.
- A temporary storage space for all the staff for fast sharing of non-critical information such as competitor product video. It is estimated that this space will need 5 TB in the first year, and it will grow by 10% (from first year) in the second year, and it will grow by 50% (from second year) in the third year. Performance is important but no redundancy is needed.
- 1 TB is needed for each store (total 3 stores) to store game cards related materials and customers transaction related to the specific store. Redundancy is needed such that no data should be lost. Note that besides the Ubuntu OS, which is pre-installed in a hard disk, you will need to use ZFS to implement the rest of the 8 hard disks
- . (a) Illustrate and justify what RAID system(s) to use for the scenario. Calculate (with working) and explain how do you plan and utilize the 8 hard disks?
Sketch a diagram with necessary labelling such as hard disk used (/dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, etc.), pool name and file system name to help in your explanation. Note that besides the diagram which is an image, your calculation and explanation needs to be in text such that the Turnitin plagiarism checker can be effective.
Marks will be deducted if you do not follow this instruction.
(b) Install additional 8 hard disks in your Ubuntu virtual machine and simulate the scenario using ZFS with relevant pools and reservations. Demonstrate with clear explanations and appropriate screenshots.
Note that you can create a scale down storage size for each hard disk such as 300 GB instead of 3 TB if your hypervisor does not allow you to create 3 TB hard disk. You can use Ubuntu Desktop for this task.
