The Straits Times article, “Can the Singapore story help us through this turbulent world?” (https://str.sg/iqLx), explores the concept of national narratives in fostering national identity and social cohesion. The article highlights Singapore’s familiar “mudflats to metropolis story… Third World to First World…” narrative, a cornerstone of national identity. However, it also acknowledges the challenges Singapore faces in a globalised world with increasing social and political divisions.

Drawing on the sociological concepts and themes covered in Study Units 1 and 2 regarding national histories, the social construction of nation-states, and nation-state building processes, engage in a critical sociological discussion of the article.

Analyse how these concepts apply to the discussion of Singapore’s founding generation and the strategies they employed to build solidarity (e.g., public housing policies).

Critically evaluate the effectiveness of the Singapore Story in addressing the challenges of contemporary Singapore. Your analysis should be clear and well-supported with relevant examples from the article and course materials.
