Conduct a qualitative research study to provide a sociological understanding of Singaporeans’ life experiences with regards to their narratives about their ‘family life’.

You are expected to demonstrate the ability to analyse the sociological underpinnings of how Singaporeans construct their ‘family’ experiences — how they create the meaning of ‘family’, their relationships with family members (including but not limited to intergenerational relations, sibling and spousal relationships), the sharing of family resources (including financial, physical and emotional support), and the distribution of housework and/or care–giving responsibilities.

You should examine the impact of socio–cultural norms and political factors (such as the role of the state, manifested through government directives and family policies), as well as issues arising from social inequalities and differentiated opportunity structures on the shaping of different family lived experiences in Singapore.

You may discuss how modernisation and other developmental trends had led to family changes over time, including the emerging patterns of family diversities and people’s attitudes and behaviour towards marriage (or singlehood), work–family balance, and/or parenting styles. You may also want to include other topics that interest you.
