Answer all the questions

1. Recall an encounter you had with an individual who has been diagnosed with a psychiatric condition. This individual could be an acquaintance, a relative, or a
client you had observed while on practicum. Alternatively, you could use the
narrative of an individual who has written about his/her psychiatric condition and had published it in journal(s) or any publication(s) (periodicals, newspaper,
magazine etc.). Include the reference for this published narrative. Answer the
following questions with reference to this individual.

(a) Provide (i) a brief narration of this individual’s onset of psychiatric
condition (or comorbidities if any), the psychosocial challenges and the
recovery process; and (ii) a summary of the dissatisfaction of this
individual in life and the domains he/she had worked on before or will be
working on in the near future.

(b) By referring to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM), analyse the multiaxial system in the evaluation process.

(c) Apply the DSM multiaxial approach, in particular DSM-IV-TR, to
prescribe the differentiate diagnosis of this individual.

(d) Unlike psychiatric diagnosis above, the psychiatric rehabilitation
diagnosis helps to determine an individual’s readiness for rehabilitation.
Formulate the rehabilitation diagnosis of this individual by assessing
his/her functions and resources

(e) Compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the
traditional (medical) diagnosis and the psychosocial rehabilitation
approach.

2. Carry out a search on the website(s), or brochures, or explanatory documents of mental health programme(s)/service(s) provided by agencies in Singapore, or make a visit to or a courtesy call to a mental health organization/agency to find out about the psychosocial rehabilitation programme(s)/service(s) offered by the organization/agency.

(a) Based on your literature search or visit, select TWO (2) psychosocial
rehabilitation services/programmes provided by the organization/agency.
Discuss the characteristics of these services/programmes and appraise the
intervention model of these psychosocial rehabilitation
programme(s)/service(s).

(b) Applying the psychiatric values and principles of rehabilitation, discuss some possibilities or controversies which might work against the recovery
process of the individual in these two programmes/services.
