This chapter serves as an introduction to a GPS system and a software receiver system that is the core of the project. The overview and scope of the project will also be highlighted in this chapter.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is operated by the United States of America (USA). The system comprises 24 satellites that orbit the Earth twice daily, whilst transmitting signals back to Earth. Three or more satellites’ signals will be locked by a GPS receiver and the method of trilateration is used to determine a particular location.
