Subject | 304SE: Power Systems |
Throughout the UK and across the global network there are significant kilometers of High Voltage transmission and distribution media. Most commonly are steel/aluminum catenary systems arranged as overhead lines and polyethylene/copper underground cables. Notwithstanding the external loading applied to these systems, they have inherent characteristics which can appear to meter equipment as if these systems themselves are acting as a load. The objective of this assessment is to investigate the behavior of underground cables, for specified lengths and forgiven laboratory conditions. The investigation will then allow for conclusions to be drawn on the behavior of the systems under test.
Star Connected Load
- Build a suitable circuit, which includes the 37.5km underground cable module
in the figure, the three-phase inductive load module, and the three-phase resistive load-module connected in Star configuration. Include Power Quality Meters to allow for measurements to be taken at the sending and receiving end of the line. - Adjust the resistor bank so that a nominal resistance of 2500 is achieved. The inductor module should be connected at 1.2H. Both resistance and Inductance values are per phase. Note the internal resistance of the inductors is approximately 270 and this should be included in calculations as appropriate.
- Apply 120V Line to Line, measured at the sending end.
- Take appropriate measurements at the sending and receiving ends, of Voltage,
Current, Apparent Power, Real Power, Reactive Power, and Power Factor.
