Leadership could be defined as “the behavior of an individual when he/she is directing the activities of a group towards a common goal”. A leader is seen as someone who sets the paths in an effort to influence people to adhere to those paths. Understanding theories and styles of leadership can help one to be more effective in their role, particularly if the position requires frequent collaboration or with the management of others. The leader is at the center of the group’s power structure, keeps the group together moves it toward goals and maintains momentum. Effective leadership develops commitment, passion and loyalty among managers and staff, and induce both individuals and organizations to make changes.

Transformational leaders leverage on both authority and power to inspire and motivate people to trust and follow their example. However, there are also likely risks and issues as a result of these too powerful influences of the transformational leaders. Situational leaders suggests that the most effective leadership style is affected by the circumstances leaders find themselves in. By understanding, recognizing and adapting to these factors, leaders will be able to influence their surroundings and followers much more successfully than if these factors are ignored.
