HCM 27060 Contemporary Issues in Tourism – Haw Par Villa, also known as the Tiger Balm Gardens was built in 1937, Singapore

Assignment Details:

Topic Question – Haw Par Villa
Haw Par Villa, also known as the Tiger Balm Gardens was built in 1937 by
brothers Aw Boon Haw, a Burmese Chinese entrepreneur and philanthropist. The park is known for its statues depicting scenes from Chinese folklore and it was free admission for all.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Haw Par Villa used to draw over a million visitors a year with its quirky statues and gruesome depiction of the underworld. Haw Par Villa also became a popular place to visit among the Singaporean families.

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) took over and revamped Haw Par Villa in
1988, but the high entrance fees affected the number of visitors. The fees were finally removed in 2001, but the public’s interest in the theme park had already declined steadily over the years.

Should the Singapore government continue to preserve Haw Par Villa or
demolish it to make way for new developments?
