AVET204 Assignment Brief

This assignment comprises two parts, one individual component (5%) and one group component (15%) each focusing on critical aspects of nutritional planning.

Part 1 focuses on building your foundational skills in determining dietary energy needs and diet selection. These principles will be further applied in

Part 2, where you will work collaboratively to analyse and justify diet choices for specific medical conditions for a patient.

Part 1: Determining the Daily Energy Requirement (Individual Assignment 5%):

Each student will be randomly assigned with a patient (Life stage, weight will be provided on POLITEMALL). Using patient information and the table below:

  1. Calculate the Daily Energy Requirement (DER) of your patient using Resting Energy Requirement – RER: 70 x (BW kg)75
  2. Recommend ONE commercial diet suitable for the assigned life stage and patient. Include your nutrition labels.
Known life stage and corresponding factors used to estimate daily energy needs for dogs
Puppy 0-4 Months = 3.0 x RER
Adult, neutered = 1.6 x RER
Weight Loss = 1.0 x RER for ideal weight
Lactating = 4.0 x RER

Justify the recommendation by showing:

  • Energy content of the diet (kcal/cup, kcal/can, etc.)
  • How your choice of diet meets the calculated requirements

Submit a report with:

  • The name and nutrition label of commercial diet
  • All calculations clearly shown
  • Feeding recommendations for your patient

Format and submission guide

Your report should be no longer than 1 A4 page (excluding cover page, declarations and reference list) in PDF format.
