TASK

This module is intended for students to complete a major research project in the topic/field of media and communication. Students will be required to apply relevant theories and concepts in this field acquired during the time of your study as a media and communication student.

You are ideally expected to build on the work or project proposed in the Research Design module.

Your expected deliverable will either be

Option A

Original 10,000-word research paper grounded in media theories in attempts to explore on-going issues and debates surrounding the field of media and communication.

or

Option B

Demonstrate your critical thinking, research capabilities, and creative talents through a 4000-word written analysis complemented by a 10–12 minute video essay.

This module will not only test your academic knowledge, but also your ability to plan and apply the most appropriate methodological approach in collating information and data. You are expected to take the initiatives to consult your supervisor and make good of the consultation hours allocated to the course.

Option A: Written Dissertation/Thesis

REQUIREMENTS

  • Presentation of the research and evaluation of the topic under investigation in a well-argued dissertation, demonstrating academic and transferrable skills including research planning and organization, time management, theoretical investigation, mapping a field of research, conducting analysis and critical reflection.
  • Addresses specific subjects, themes and issues in a manner appropriate to the substantive curriculum of your general programme of study and identifying larger key debates where appropriate.
  • Presentation of a dissertation which utilizes an appropriate style of academic writing, and the established conventions and genre forms of such writing.

Ethics

Students must gain approval on the research topic from the module tutor. During consultations with your tutor, if it is felt that ethical clearance is needed, you will be advised of the process and the deadline for obtaining that clearance. If clearance is not obtained by the deadline, then you will not be able to proceed with the project. If you do so without clearance, the project will not be accepted for submission, will not be marked and you may face disciplinary penalties.

Your work for this module will be submitted by [TBA] via the Turnitin link on the module’s PSB Academy Blackboard.

You are advised to submit your work at least two days prior to the final day to allow time for technical issues or errors to be resolved.

If you fail to submit work for the module or submit an assessed piece of work late without an agreed extension, you will receive a mark of 0% for that piece of work, even if it is one minute late. You will however be eligible for a re-sit attempt at the next available assessment opportunity where your mark will be capped at 40%.

Contains a clear statement demonstrating that the focus of the study is on a significant problem that is worthy of study

The Significance of the study is described in terms of knowledge generation and professional application

Literature Review 20%

The review of related research and literature is clearly related to the problem statement as expressed in:

a. Research questions and hypothesis, or

b. Study questions and objectives

The review of related research and literature includes:
a. Comparisons/contrasts of different points of view or different research outcomes
b. Relationship of the study to previous research

The content of the review is drawn from acceptable peer‐reviewed journals or sound academic journals or there is justification for using other sources.

The review is an integrated, critical essay on the most relevant and current published knowledge on the topic. The review is organized around major ideas or themes.

Methodology 20%

The Introduction describes how the research design derives logically from the problem or issue statement.

The findings:

Objectives

  1. Written Analysis (4000 words):
    • Must include a clear introduction, literature review, critical analysis, and conclusion.

  2. Video Essay (10–12 minutes):
