TASK

This module is intended for students to complete a major research project in the topic/field of media and communication. Students will be required to apply relevant theories and concepts in this field acquired during the time of your study as a media and communication student.

You are ideally expected to build on the work or project proposed in the Research Design module.

Your expected deliverable will either be

Option A

Original 10,000-word research paper grounded in media theories in attempts to explore on-going issues and debates surrounding the field of media and communication.

or

Option B

Demonstrate your critical thinking, research capabilities, and creative talents through a 4000-word written analysis complemented by a 10–12 minute video essay.

This module will not only test your academic knowledge, but also your ability to plan and apply the most appropriate methodological approach in collating information and data. You are expected to take the initiatives to consult your supervisor and make good of the consultation hours allocated to the course.

Option A: Written Dissertation/Thesis

REQUIREMENTS

• Presentation of the research and evaluation of the topic under investigation in a well-argued dissertation, demonstrating academic and transferrable skills including research planning and organization, time management, theoretical investigation, mapping a field of research, conducting analysis and critical reflection.

• Addresses specific subjects, themes and issues in a manner appropriate to the substantive curriculum of your general programme of study and identifying larger key debates where appropriate.

• Presentation of a dissertation which utilizes an appropriate style of academic writing, and the established conventions and genre forms of such writing.

Ethics

Students must gain approval on the research topic from the module tutor. During consultations with your tutor, if it is felt that ethical clearance is needed, you will be advised of the process and the deadline for obtaining that clearance. If clearance is not obtained by the deadline, then you will not be able to proceed with the project. If you do so without clearance, the project will not be accepted for submission, will not be marked and you may face disciplinary penalties.

Your work for this module will be submitted by [TBA] via the Turnitin link on the module’s PSB Academy Blackboard.

You are advised to submit your work at least two days prior to the final day to allow time for technical issues or errors to be resolved.

If you fail to submit work for the module or submit an assessed piece of work late without an agreed extension, you will receive a mark of 0% for that piece of work, even if it is one minute late. You will however be eligible for a re-sit attempt at the next available assessment opportunity where your mark will be capped at 40%.

Option B: Investigative Report & Video Essay

Objectives

• To critically examine a media-related topic through both written and visual storytelling.
• To demonstrate the ability to synthesize research with creative production techniques.
• To explore innovative ways of presenting arguments, case studies, and theoretical perspectives.

Requirements

1. Written Analysis (4000 words):
   • Must include a clear introduction, literature review, critical analysis, and conclusion.
   • Should reference at least 15 academic sources, integrating theoretical frameworks with case studies or industry examples.
   • Demonstrate understanding of key media concepts and their real-world application.
2. Video Essay (10–12 minutes):
   • A visual and narrative exploration of your topic, reflecting the arguments made in your written analysis.
   • Should be well-structured, engaging, and effectively communicate your critical perspective.
   • Must include proper citation of visual and audio materials used.

Assessment Criteria

• Research Depth: Quality of analysis and integration of sources.
• Creativity & Production Quality: Effective use of visuals, sound, and editing techniques.
• Critical Engagement: Clarity of argument and reflective thinking in both the written and video components.
• Technical Competence: Proper editing, transitions, and synchronization of visual and audio elements.

Submission Requirements

• Both components must be submitted through Blackboard by the specified deadline.
• Video Essay must be in MP4 format and uploaded alongside the written document.

Coursework Deadline Extensions

Should you encounter difficulties in completing your assignment on time due to unforeseen circumstances, kindly bring this to the attention of your dissertation supervisor as well as the program executive in charge.

Upon reviewing your reasons, the management will decide if extensions are granted on a case by case basis.

Please note: module staff are not allowed to give unofficial extensions.

We expect all students to act with academic integrity, which means that they will study and produce work in an open, honest and responsible manner.

Academic dishonesty covers any attempt by a student to gain unfair advantage (e.g. extra marks) for her/himself, or for another student, in their assessed work. It not only damages your personal reputation, but also the reputation of the entire university, and it will not be tolerated at Coventry University/PSB Academy. There are severe penalties for students who are found guilty of academic dishonesty ranging from obtaining a mark of 0% for the piece of work through to exclusion from the University.
