TUTOR MARKED ASSIGNMENTS 01-02

The overall assessment weighting for this course is as follows:

TMA Submission

It is strongly recommended that you make an early submission to check the originality report and, if necessary, make amendments to your document for resubmission. Note that the Turnitin report is usually generated immediately after the first submission; however, subsequent reports may take up to one day to generate. Do note that Turnitin will not accept any further submissions AFTER the cut-off time. There is a 12-hour grace period after the cut-off time, which is not an extended deadline but solely meant for solving any technical problems that you may encounter while attempting to make a submission before the cut-off time. Please email Canvas Support immediately (with relevant screenshots and your TMA attached) and follow up with Canvas Support first thing in the morning to ensure that the problem is resolved before the grace period is over.

One late submission is allowed only if no prior submissions were made before the cut-off time. Do note that the Canvas system will automatically deduct penalty marks for every day that your assignment is late. With this automatic deduction, there will be no need to request for extensions from your tutor because your tutor does not have the mandate to over-ride the Canvas system settings. You will need to form your own judgement as to how many marks you are willing to forego for each extra day that you gain to work on your assignment.

Take care to ensure that you upload the correct TMA document to the correct folder of the correct course. Requests to transfer incorrectly uploaded documents to the correct folder will require an official appeal (and an administrative fee).

Back up your TMA at all times. Once you have uploaded your TMA (in Word document format only), retain the Turnitin digital receipt as evidence of a successful submission. View your submission to ensure that the entire document has been uploaded successfully.

Reminder: When you submit your TMA, please follow the instructions in Canvas and label your file correctly (your name must be in the filename) so that your instructors can upload your essay properly after marking the assignments.

Plagiarism and Collusion

The assignment is to be completed on your own. You may discuss the TMA with your course-mates; however, the assignment must be written independently. Do not share your notes, draft, or final TMA with anyone before the marked TMAs are returned to you.

Avoid plagiarism by giving yourself sufficient time to research and understand the material so that you can write up your assignment in your own words. Quotations should be used sparingly. Simply citing the source of ‘copied’ chunks of text does not excuse it from plagiarism. Do ensure that any paraphrasing is done appropriately, even if you use text from your own work that you have submitted as part of another assignment for the same or another course.

The University takes a very serious view of plagiarism (passing off someone else’s ideas as your own, or recycling of contents from your own earlier marked TMA from the same course or another course) and collusion (submitting an assignment which is the same or very similar to another student’s). Both are very serious academic offences. Please refer to the Student Handbook on the penalties for plagiarism or collusion. You are strongly advised to submit your TMA early, check the plagiarism report yourself, and if needed revise and resubmit your

TMA before  the submission  deadline.

This assignment is worth 20% of the final mark for ELG101 Discovering Language.

The cut-off date for this assignment is Monday, 1 September 2025, 11:55pm.

Question 1 

(a) Identify the function of the words in the following sentence. Present your answers using the table below.

“Jennifer danced on the sunny balcony.”

(b) With reference to the three sentences below and paying particular attention to the underlined words, define the concepts of form and function as covered in the course and explain the relationship between form, function, and meaning.

(i) Her child devoured the chocolate bar.
(ii) The bar has been set quite high with this assignment.
(iii) I met him at the cocktail bar for drinks.

The following table depicts a student’s attempt at identifying the phonological processes involved in the realisation of four words. Demonstrate your knowledge of phonology by explaining whether the phonological processes have been correctly identified. If the phonological process has been incorrectly identified, provide the correct phonological process if it has been covered in the course.

Examine the following data from Language X and Language Y. Demonstrate your understanding of linguistic typology by identifying and explaining the two possible ways of classifying Language X and Language Y.

Examine the following song lyrics and answer the questions below.

This night is sparkling, don’t you let it go

I’m wonderstruck, blushing all the way home

I’ll spend forever wondering if you knew

I was enchanted to meet you

(a) Illustrate the phonological structure of the two underlined words using syllable trees.

(b) Identify one pair of rhyming monosyllabic words in the passage. Apply your knowledge of syllable structure to explain why they constitute a rhyming pair.

(c) Lea falls sick with an unidentified illness that causes her vocal cords to vibrate constantly when she speaks. One of the words from the above lyrics she has difficulty articulating is ‘wonderstruck’ – particularly, the final syllable, /strʌk/. Demonstrate your understanding of English Phonotactic Rules by explaining why Lea’s condition will result in an utterance that is not acceptable in English.

Examine the following sentence and answer the questions below.

“The hairdresser cut her favourite client’s hair at the shop.”

(a) Illustrate the RRG tree diagram which represents the sentence. Demonstrate your knowledge of RRG by explaining the tree diagram, describing arguments, verb valency, and how constituents come together to make meaning.

(b) Identify the arguments and their respective semantic roles in the sentence. Present your answers using the table format below.

Read the following exchange between two university students. Student B is enrolled in a course taught by Prof Z, who is known for giving boring lectures.

Student A:  How are you finding the course taught by Prof Z?

Student B:    Terribly exciting, as you probably expected.

Student A:  Do you think I should take it next semester?

Student B:  I wouldn’t take a course taught by Prof Z if my programme didn’t  require it.

The following questions should be answered by drawing from concepts covered in the course.

(a) Student B flouts one of Grice’s Maxims in each of his utterances. Identify the Maxim flouted in each utterance and explain a possible reason for doing so.

(b) Identify two discourse strategies employed during the exchange and explain possible reasons for their use.

Question 5

(a) A speech community refers to a group of people who share a language or language variety. Examples of speech communities within Singapore include speakers of ethnic languages, professionals like doctors or lawyers who make use of specialised jargon for their work, and teenagers who communicate using slang (e.g. Gen Alpha slang).

In no more than 300 words, discuss a speech community that you are a part of. Identify the social factors associated with the speech community, describe several features of the language or language variety spoken, and explain the implications of membership to such a speech community. What effect does having a shared language have on personal identity and social relationships? How has being a part of this speech community has impacted your language use? Your response should contain a minimum of two citations and make use of concepts covered in the course where possible.
