Policy briefs (sometimes also referred to as executive summaries of longer, more detailed reports) require students to distill key points (policy particulars and the empirical foundation/rationale for the policy) and present the material in a 4-page policy brief.

This policy brief assignment will help students synthesize a large amount of information about some aspect of social policies for aging societies and then communicate it accurately and concisely to an audience that potentially knows little, or lacks specifics, about the policy in question.

Include the following components:

• Introduce the problem, explain why it is important, and why it requires policy attention
• Summarize the key characteristics of the social policy you chose that addresses the issue
• Provide data to support your claim that policy intervention/redesign/tweaking is needed
• Summarize the major demonstrated effects of the policy on the target population
