University Singapore University of Social Science (SUSS)
Subject PSY256: Educational Psychology

Assignment Brief:

Ivan is a bank manager and his wife, Mae, is a part-time nurse who works 3 days a week in a private hospital. They have two children, Tom and Jane, who would be considered as gilled and talented by some educators. They are all Singaporeans. In school, both their children have grouped as high-ability students who have achieved excellent academic results in their main subjects (English, Mathematics, Science, and Chinese) in a Singapore primary school. Tom is a Primary 4 student who has just been elected as the vice-captain of the school soccer team by his teammates.

The soccer coach wants to send Tom to more inter-school soccer competitions as he is a good soccer player and has the ability to motivate his team-mates. Tom is friendly and is fluent in various local Chinese dialects, Malay, and Tamil, having picked up these languages through interaction with his multiracial classmates. Tom’s teachers and parents have also noted that Tom had picked up other foreign languages such as Korean, Japanese, and German through watching television. In fact, he is studying French in a language center because he loves the language.

Jane, a Primary 5 student, is a quiet and shy girl and only has a few good friends in class. Jane spends a lot of time reading a variety of books and doing schoolwork. She enjoys ballet and spends a lot of time practicing the cello. She has just returned from an international cello competition in Prague where she won the first position in the solo cellist category. She loves playing the cello and competing in musical competitions.

Describe with reasons the possible intelligence relevant to Tom and Jane using Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences. Discuss and provide reasons why specific specialized independent schools (SIS) in Singapore may be suitable to both of their talents and interests when they proceed to secondary school. Would you recommend enrolling each child in specialized independent schools? Provide at least two reasons and explain the rationale behind the recommendation for each child.

Additional notes/guidance/instructions:

  • Explain and elaborate on the theory of multiple intelligences.
  • Which intelligences are relevant to each child? Support your answer with reference to descriptions given in the scenario. If you need to make assumptions, explain what these are showing logical reasoning.
  • Which specific specialized independent school(s) may be suitable for each child? Why?
  • Are there any other types of secondary schools that are suitable for these children?
