Research Presentation Week

15 minutes per student  (10 mins for presentation and 3-4 mins feedback or discussion with your supervisor)

Final report

• Your research presentations will be conducted over Zoom in small groups of students (4-6 students) together with your supervisor and it will be recorded. Your presentation should last for 8-10 minutes, followed by 3-4 minutes of discussion with your supervisor.
• You will be expected to attend the entire session (compulsory), which will last approximately 1 hour.

Tips and tricks of a good presentation

• Your presentation should follow the same format as a journal article
• It is a brief summary of your research project, containing the same elements as your final report.
• Be clear about the aims, methods, results, etc., of your research and this will help you to write up your final report.
• The presentation will also build on previous experience of giving oral presentations, which is an important skill to develop for future employment.
• In this instance you will be presenting your own research, which should make it even more exciting, and closer to the types of presentation you might be expected to give in your future career.

The elements of a good presentation

• Title
• introduction (2-3 mins)
• methods (2-3 mins)
• results (2 mins)
• discussion (2-3 mins)
• references

Presentation should be 10 mins in total

Title

• Be specific
• shows your IV(s) and DV clearly
• e.g. The effect of mindfulness based therapy on depression
• The relationship between personality and conspiracist belief

Introduction

• a brief summary of critical work leading up to your project. Present story with a clear rationale and explanation of theory
• Clearly linked aims and hypothesis
• no need for an abstract!

Methods

• a brief summary of your main methods & materials
• separate into different subsections, Participants, Design, Material and Procedure.

Top tips:

• show actual stimuli

Results

• identify the one or two main findings
• what analyses did you perform
• what did you find?
• or planned analyses / analyses strategy

Top tip:

• present your data in figures or tables

Discussion

• link your findings back to your predictions
• link your findings back to the literature
• what is the ‘take-home-message’?

• cite your sources in reference section
• this is standard academic practise
• references may be in a smaller font
