This assignment is worth 40% of the final mark for NCO101 – Living with Community.

GBA Neighbourhood Worksheet

Each group member must complete this worksheet based on their chosen neighbourhood.

• Responses and/or findings may be presented in bullet points
• Responses and/or findings should be sufficiently substantive to help the group address the GBA question(s).
• Responses and/or findings to Prompts 2–4 in the worksheet should be evaluated collectively and synthesised (i.e. to identify commonalities, strengths and weaknesses across the neighbourhoods that support effective community engagement and wholesomeness) to complete the Written Report.
• Prompt 5 responses will assist in preparing the group’s collective position on the importance of Community Engagement, and recommendation/solution to improve the chosen CE effort.

This worksheet should ideally be done as early as possible to allow the GBA to progress smoothly. Group can collectively decide on and adjust their own internal deadlines. Failure to complete the worksheet by GBA Progress Update deadline may result in a severe penalty for the offending individual(s).

1) How would you describe a wholesome neighbourhood to a 10-year-old? Support your understanding with examples from your neighbourhood or neighbourhood(s) you are familiar with or have read about.

A wholesome neighbourhood is a place where people feel at home, safe, happy and cared for. It is more about the residents who live there and how they threat each other daily.

For my neighbourhood, Chua Chu Kang, there are a few reasons which makes it a wholesome neighbourhood.

2) Relevant background information about your chosen neighbourhood. Information can include (and not limited to) demography, residency types, socio-economic features, and infrastructure. You can refer to the Department of Statistics (DOS) website to get started.

Purpose of this question is to demonstrate familiarity with the chosen neighbourhood and not merely repeat popular but one-sided / generic perspectives (usually provided by lazy websites or GenAI platforms), e.g. Yishun is a dangerous place or there are no local residents in Little India.

3) Identify at least three different community engagement initiatives in the neighbourhood. For each initiative, describe the target community and/or community issue, the objectives, and the engagement process.

4) Select one of the community engagement efforts from Prompt 3. Identify its strengths (the ways it adds value to the community) and area(s) for improvement (how it can do better to shape a wholesome community). Provide explanations for your observations.

5) Of the strengths you have highlighted, select one and explain with examples why you feel that is the most important in community engagement and building a wholesome neighbourhood.

6) Of the area(s) for improvement you have listed, select one and provide brief suggestion(s) to address them.
