ASSESSMENT ITEM 3: DESCRIPTION
This is the first part of the major assignment for this subject. Students will be required to choose a specific enterprise, assess its sustainability and propose a sustainability monitoring system appropriate for this enterprise.
Students may select an international enterprise that they can evaluate through the sustainability related information provided in CSR/Sustainability reports, integrated reports and/or annual reports, or alternatively they may select a local enterprise which they can access for a site visit so that they can observe its operations next to other information about the enterprise such as through their website or company reports. Students should NOT use their place of work or where they have previously worked, because it becomes difficult to separate the creative and learning purpose of the assignment from the issue of students simply reporting the monitoring systems of the known workplace. Nevertheless, students may choose a place similar to their own workplace.
Students should carefully consider their choice of enterprise as it is used in both Assessment item 3 and Assessment item 4, which account for 80% of total marks. To provide a realistic account of the enterprise, students might need to undertake a site visit for observation and/or interviews.
Assessment item 3 is a group assignment. Students will work in groups of 3 and select one enterprise to focus on.
Assessment item 3 focuses on overall analysis of an enterprise’s sustainability. The report should include the following:
- INTRODUCTION: Introduce the enterprise you have selected. Explain what it does, in which industry (-ies) it operates, where it is located, any other relevant information and introduce the sustainability orientation of the company (500 words).
- SUSTAINABILITY IN THE INDUSTRY: Describe sustainability issues in the industry in which the enterprise operates. The most important aspects relevant for companies in this industry should be provided and discussed (such as through a materiality assessment), and connections to and relevance of the SDGs can be discussed. What are the greatest sustainability concerns in this industry, and how can/does the industry address these concerns. Provide information related to the industry internationally as well as in the location where the selected enterprise operates (700 words).
- SUSTAINABILITY IN THE ENTERPRISE: Critically analyse current sustainability initiatives in the selected enterprise. What does this enterprise do well, and which areas require improvement (700 words).
- ACTION PLAN: Conclude the report by one-two paragraphs that address how the second part of the report will be completed. Information gathering activities and source of information should be specified. They may include interviews, site visits, corporate website, review websites, industry publications, news articles, academic literature (100 words).
- REFERENCES
The report should be 2,000 words in length (10% allowance). The format is A4, 1.5 spacing, 12 point Times New Roman. The length specified does not include references and appendices. All contents of the report need to be referenced unless the information comes from personal observations or interviews (use APA style referencing). Any primary information (i.e. gather through onsite visit or personal communication) needs to be clearly identified.
