Introduction

This assignment is intended to test your understanding of the major methodological approaches to research(quantitative and qualitative), and the problems and purposes to which each is suited.

It also tests your understanding of the way in which research questions and hypotheses are developed from the initial identification of a research problem, and the role that a knowledge of the literature plays in supporting this process. This theoretical knowledge will be key to the design of your own research project.

Tasks

Identify, using the journals available online from the ARU library, two instances of research papers in your own discipline which use methodologies corresponding to two of the major methodological approaches (quantitative and qualitative research), and which also provide a discussion of the development of detailed research questions and hypotheses from a broadly-

identified research problem. Ensure that your selected papers support these methodological choices and the development of that discussion with extensive citations of relevant literature (you may build on your contributions to the engagement exercise).

Write an introduction, setting out the nature and purpose of your two chosen research papers, and a rationale for your choice.

Summarise, in tabular form, the research aims and objectives/research questions/hypotheses, research design, and methodological choices of your two chosen papers.
