The Effects of Cyclist Groups on Motorists’ Pattern Recognition or Attention
There have been several conflicts between motorists and cyclists who ride on the road. Some of these conflicts arise due to accidents between them. Motorists and cyclists abiding by traffic rules and best practices are ways to minimise accident occurrences.
Cyclists who cycle on the roads have to abide by rules such as not cycling on expressways. From 1 January 2022, cycling groups are also limited to a maximum length of five bicycles. That is, there is a cap of five cyclists when riding single-file, and ten cyclists if riding two abreast. The best practice of keeping 30m or the distance of approximately two lamp posts should also be kept between cycling groups. Motorists are advised to keep a minimum
distance of 1.5m when driving past cyclists.
The objective of this TMA is to explain how the new cycling formation rules and recommendations (i.e. maintaining the length of five bicycles for each cycling group and 30m between cycling groups) will affect a motorist’s pattern recognition of OR attention towards cyclists. Specifically, you will need to answer the following FOUR (4) questions.
Question 1
State and define any ONE (1) pattern recognition or attention theory studied in class or from the course material that is relevant to motorists’ cognitive processing of cyclists in formation.
Question 2
Explain the theory chosen in Question 1.
Question 3
Apply the theory detailed in Question 1 and 2 to discuss how the new formation rule for cyclists on the roads can improve motorists’ cognitive processing of cyclists.
Question 4
Apply the theory detailed in questions 1 and 2 to discuss how the new formation rule for cyclists on the roads does not impact or impair the motorists’ cognitive processing of cyclists.
