Smart Built Environment – Singapore
Over the last 60 years, Singapore has been rapidly urbanising its built environment to become a global city. Extensive infrastructure and amenities were built to support the business community and our people. These include roads, railway, ports, utilities, public institutions and various public amenities. As a result, today Singapore has a building stock of over 200,000 buildings (skyscraper office buildings, high-rise residential buildings and low-rise commercial premises). These buildings require professional facilities management to ensure that the buildings can function properly. But, many of these existing buildings were designed at different times, and therefore are not “smart and green”. As such, these buildings lack operational efficiency and also contribute significantly to the carbon footprint of our built environment.
The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has developed an Industry Transformation Map (ITM) to rejuvenate and upgrade our existing built environment. The key areas of focus include (1) Design for maintainability, (2) Adoption of Green initiatives, and (3) Smart Facilities Management.
You have been appointed as the Smart Facilities Management Director of BCA to spearhead the transformation of the built environment industry. You are required to adopt the BCA’s five-step Smart FM process to make recommendations to the government on how the industry can implement suitable smart FM technologies and solutions to upgrade the existing stock of buildings. Your proposal shall include the following:
