DATA ANALYTICS ASSIGNMENT
1. OBJECTIVES
- To identify business issues, given a dataset
- To document and to perform data exploration
- To perform a data extract, transform, and load (ETL) process in order to build a dimensional model
- To create interactive data visualizations.
- To document and to present the business insights and recommendations
2. TASK OVERVIEW
Context:
You are a Digital Marketing Analyst.
You request for marketing information, from the Enterprise IT Dept.
You received seven data files (collectively a dataset), which are extracted from the company’s Customer Relationship Management System (CRM) system.
Your Tasks
This project requires you:
- To identify at least ONE (1) business issue of your choice based on the given dataset.
- To explore, extract, transform and load the data into a dimensional model using Power BI.
- To create interactive Data Visualizations using Power BI to gain insights on the business issue you have identified.
- To produce a Report using Microsoft Word to document the following:
- the business issues
- the data exploration
- the data preparation
- the data modeling done
- the data visualization works done
- the business insights found
- the business recommendations
- To present your findings.
3. ASSIGNMENT COMPONENTS

1. Problem Statement • Prepare a report to explain the business problem. Identify ONE (1) business problem of your choice based on the given dataset. |

2. Data Exploration and Dimensional Model Building • Perform data exploration using Power BI. • Derive and draw a Dimensional Model based on the dataset to solve the business problem. The model should have clearly labelled dimension tables, measure tables and table attributes. Relations between fact and dimension tables must also be shown clearly. Attach this part as an annex in your report. • Perform data Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) to build the data model using Power BI based on the Dimensional Model drawn. • Prepare report to explain: the data exploration and findings; the data Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) steps used to build the Dimensional Model. Details should include descriptions, scripts and screenshots, if any. |

3. Data Visualizations Building • Develop interactive Data Visualizations using Power BI to answer the business problem. |

The written report must use the “Assignment Report Cover” as its front page, with the Student Name, Student Number fill up.
4. ONLINE PRESENTATION – DEMONSTRATION AND EXPLANATION
You are required to submit a video recorded presentation to showcase and demo your work using your PowerBI Desktop.
During the recording, your webcam must be turn on, clearly showing your face, for authentication.
The video recorded presentation should not exceed 10 minutes.
Video recorded presentations which exceed the allotted time will be penalized.
This video assignment app, powered by Bongo, allows students to capture their presentations multiple times and finally choose their best presentation to be submitted. Each student is to practice the presentation in advance to ensure completion within 10 minutes. The recording must include both webcam (clearly showing the student’s face for authentication) and your PowerBI Desktop.
Select the RECORD VIDEO option and choose CAMERA + SCREEN as shown in the figure below. The figure may differ with the constant update of the Bongo software, hence students may see a different layout but general steps should still apply.
After recording the video, click save (as shown below) and it will be ready for students to append it for submission.
Select the video by clicking on the Star and click SUBMIT.

5. DELIVERABLES
EACH INDIVIDUAL is required to submit:
- A softcopy of the Report (in .doc or .pdf format) via assignment submission link in Politemall, with the first page being the “Assignment Report Cover”
- The PowerBI file via assignment submission link in PoliteMall.
- Your recorded video, submitted via the Bongo app, found in PoliteMall.
6. PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Data Exploration and Dimensional Model Building (20 marks) | The report will be assessed based on: • clear and appropriate Dimensional model drawing • working data relationship, and appropriate Dimensional model built • a professionally written data exploration and ETL steps and explanation |
Presentation Slides and Presentation (20 marks) | The presentations will be assessed based on: • whether the presentations are clear, concise and well-organized • whether presenters show clear understanding of work done • whether presenters can clearly and properly explain how to derive business insights using data visualizations created • whether arguments are logical and well-thought out |
Business Insight and Recommendation (10 marks) |
The report will be assessed based on: • depth and quality of explanation of the various business insight and recommendation • a professionally presented report |
Data Visualizations Building (40 marks) |
The report will be assessed based on: • clarity and correct use of data visualizations to analyze business problem • interactive data visualizations work correctly without errors, bugs or undesired behaviors • interactive data visualizations are designed with appropriate and easy-to-use layout • use of advanced Power BI features |
