Question 1
Your client intends to develop the area as highlighted in Figure 1. This area generally has no high-rise buildings and skyscrapers. There are a few buildings that are low-rise shophouses, landed property and farmhouses. There is still plenty of empty land for residential development. The intention is to develop approximately 300 units of townhouses in the area. Each townhouse consists of four bedrooms, a roof terrace and two private carpark lots (Refer to Figure 2).


Based on the scenario above, you should do the research study in addition to the materials in your textbook and prepare the write up to answer the following questions in your report.
(a) Describe the geologic condition expected in the area and propose the type of soil investigation and testing to be performed.
(b) Identify and discuss the potential types of loading which will be acting on this type of building.
(c) List the structural elements that can be found in this type of building and describe the function of each element. Diagram can be used to aid the explanation if required.
(d) Propose a suitable type of foundation for this type of building. The proposal should include the following points:
• Description of the system with an appropriate sketch
• Explain the reasons for the selection
(e) Propose a suitable excavation method and earth retaining system to be used during the construction of the foundation. The proposal should include the following points:
• Description of the system with an appropriate sketch
• Explain the reasons for the selection
(f) Ground improvement is carried out to increase the density, strength, stiffness, seepage characteristics of soils so as to prevent excessive settlements of buildings, ensure sufficient bearing capacity of the foundations and ensure sufficient stability of the slopes. Discuss the need to deploy ground improvement techniques in this project and justify the decision with reasons.
