Assignment Details:

You will submit a 4,000-word essay selected from the following list. Whichever title is selected, your discussion should address the assessment criteria published below (and for which we have provided a copy of the assessment rubric we will be using to mark your work in the assessment tab of the eLP so you can self-assess your work prior to submission).

The three titles are:

1. Identify and critically discuss 2-3 key challenges faced by leaders of Early Years services such as Sure Start Children’s Centres.
2. Define ‘leading well’ in the Early Years and critically justify the personal resources (e.g. principles, values, qualities, knowledge, skills) that an individual requires to do that.
3. Critically evaluate what is different about leading and managing in the Early Years as opposed to other sectors.

Criteria for Assessment

• Understanding of Leadership in Early Years: Understanding of leadership in the Early Years demonstrates an appreciation of contemporary issues and complexity.
• Your writing: Demonstrates appropriate level six academic writing skills, with a particular focus on clearly articulating and justifying a critical and analytical response.
• Understanding and talking about context: Demonstrates a clearly developed understanding and critique of relevant contexts (e.g. policy material, standards).
• Use of theory: Ability to select and use relevant theoretical perspectives, concepts, and frameworks in providing a critical and analytical response.
