  • At the same time, the student concerned will self-appraise his/her own performance.
  • After the lab practice, each student is required to submit ONE (1) Practice Portfolio (PP), which is a 400-word reflection journal. S/he is:
to critically evaluate and self-critique his/her own counselling experience and learn from the clinical lab practice.

2. Case Report

i. Video Recording of a Career Counselling or Coaching Session (30%)
ii. Written Report – Reflection on Video Recording (30%)

i. Video Recording of a Career Counselling or Coaching Session

  • You are required to conduct one (1) session of career counselling to a client with real and work/career-related issue(s). g., A poly/university student feeling confused and wants to change his/her field of study; a colleague who feels stagnant in his/her job and is considering a job change; someone who is at the crossroads of his/her career and contemplating a career change; etc.
  • Decide with the client on the career counselling mode: either face-to-face (F2F) or online session. For online sessions, inform and get consent from the client that he/she will need to turn on the camera during the session and that his/her face will be recorded. Facial expressions are important ways for you to assess and monitor the client’s state of mind.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to find a client and to arrange with him/her for the career counselling session.
  • A career counselling session, taking about 45 minutes in duration, may be at any stage of the career counselling process.
  • You will have to include a minimum of a 20-minute video recording of a section of interaction selected from the recorded career counselling session in the Case Report.
  • The session shall take place in a comfortable and quiet meeting room setting.
  • During the session, the client should have his/her back facing the camera.
  • Acceptable video file formats include mp4, avi, flv, wmv, and mov.
Things to be done before the recording:
  • It is your responsibility to find a client (family members and SDCC classmates are not accepted).
  • Before taking on a case, you should have consulted your lecturer to determine the suitability of such a case for this coursework assignment.
  • It is important that you pre-screen the client and his/her issue(s) to avoid taking on clinical, difficult, and/or mental health issues such as depression, abuse, violence, chronic disease, grief, ethical dilemma, legal problem, etc.
  • You will need to obtain written consent from the client to do a video recording for inclusion in this coursework assignment. You are also required to sign and submit a declaration that the video recording is to be used in this coursework assignment only. Refer to Annex A for the student Declaration and Client Consent Form. This form is required for submission in SA3.0.
Things to be done during the recording:

Ensure video recording is switched on.

For face-to-face counselling, the video recorder can be placed behind the client, so that the client’s face is not visible. For online counselling, both parties need to be seen clearly.

ii. Written Report – Reflection on Video Recording

a) The case report is a 1,600 to 2,000-word written reflection report that demonstrates students’ critical evaluation of their communication and career counselling skills.

b) The case report must be based on a video recording of a career counselling session. Refer to the video recording instructions below:

Based on the recorded video, each student must include a 20-minute video excerpt highlighting interactions from the recorded counselling session.

c) The case report and the video recording will provide evidence of:

  • understanding of the client’s work/career-related issue(s)
  • application of career counselling, communication, and rapport-building skills
  • application of concepts and theoretical principles learned in the previous modules.
  • a high degree of self-awareness
  • active and reflective listening
  • empathic responses
