- Identify ethical considerations in real-world issues and discuss them using
relevant concepts. - Demonstrate the process of ethical reasoning when developing personal
responses to real-world ethical issues.
Overview
In this course, we are concerned with the study of two moral theories (Kantian duty-based ethics and Utilitarianism) and you will learn to question and justify them. Before we delve into them in the following two weeks, we will first take a step back to ask why we need ethics.
In this study unit, you will familiarise yourself with common terms that will be used when discussing moral issues, and learn to exercise precision in the way you think about moral issues and the way you formulate moral arguments. You will also learn exactly what moral issues are concerned with, what moral claims are, what the different types of moral claims are, and why we need ethics.
Ethics is not only a guide to moral decisions but is also a way to advocate social cohesion and harmony, based on a shared understanding of our national values and the common good. In exercising moral reasoning, you will evaluate opportunities and challenges presented in an increasingly diverse society such as Singapore and learn to demonstrate social and cultural sensitivity that fosters awareness and respect for differing norms, traditions, and perspectives both in the community and at work.
