University Singapore University of Social Science (SUSS)
Subject PSY353: Positive Psychology

Assignment 1 – Written Assignment
Partner a classmates and observe them during the course. You are welcome to ask them questions and share stories. Then write a paper answering the question: “Is he/she flourishing?”

For this assignment, you are assessing whether your classmate is flourishing and arguing your perspective with specific examples you have observed/ found out/ measured. Please support these with research as much as possible. You can observe the other person based on one of the well-being models covered in class. You can integrate the models/ theories and principles that we covered in the module to show your understanding and application.

For Example: For X, the quote from Christopher Peterson (2008), is very true “Other people matter and we are all other people to everyone else.” During conversations, she is focused, present, and often affirming the conversation. When talking to X, there is a sense she is engaged in what the speaker is saying and active listening is something she practices to cultivate high-quality connections (Stephens, Heaphy & Dutton, 2012).

You do not need to tell me the name of the person and you are more than welcome to keep it confidential.

Assignment 2 – Written Assignment
Martin Seligman has a goal of seeing 51% of the world’s population flourishing by 2051. What goals can you set to help yourself and the community flourish? How can you go about achieving these goals?

Please treat this assignment as your personal “action plan” on how you will use Positive Psychology Interventions (PPIs) and Positive Psychology (PP) principles to contribute to Seligman’s goal. You can focus your paper on one or many of your life domains, based on what is relevant to you. This is your starting point on integrating PP into your life.

For example, you can focus on how you will enable yourself and others to flourish in the workplace. Or, you can look across your life domains and provide an overview of how you will apply PP. For example, you will focus on cultivating positive emotions in your family and nurturing high-quality connections (using the 4 pathways) in the workplace and your church community. Most importantly, make it relevant and please provide specific examples of PPIs and support these with research.

Below are some questions if it isn’t too intrusive on your end.

– how were you after the breakup?

– was everything that made you happy purely centered on the relationship?

– steps that you took gradually?

– what have you found out about yourself in this journey?

– could you elaborate more about your music?

– what newfound passion(s) have you embark on?

– why did you start your journey in this school and where do you see yourself advancing towards?

After the breakup… I was still doing my internship and because of stress and difficulty processing and managing both sides, I experienced emotional and mental burnout. There were feelings of exhaustion and of being drained out. I plowed through to the end. Then just dropped into despair. Then I had to adjust somehow to function and minimally do what I needed for school. Right after the break up though, I think i was in shock and denial. Like I was deployed in China for an internship, and was still trying to “win her back”. I remember I was just devastated yet still needed to go to work. It was hard. And I broke down a few times even in the office.

  • I don’t understand this qn – but I think in that period nothing could make me feel joy. There may have been fleeting happiness due to certain events (company DnD and RnR which I was fortunate to go for even as an intern, right timing as well) I went for in that period, but there was a “dead inside” feeling even if I’m smiling outside. I think that is what I experienced because it has been a while back and my memory is not that sharp regarding this period as of now!

I forced myself to leave my bed, to go for a walk, jogs, etc. I watched uplifting, spiritually charged youtube videos. Read online articles about healing, breakups, etc. Tried to consume content that may have helped. Joined a CCA in school to create new experiences and relationships for myself.

I always find a way out or through, even though things might seem impossible. That I’m always learning and growing. That every experience might be there for me to learn from.

I always wanted to be a singer. I joined some competitions many years ago and started doing some gigs. Singing at events and weddings. I also started composing, which I’m still doing now. However, I feel the passion is diminishing gradually. I still enjoy listening to music that makes me feel loved and touched. But I find that it’s kinda tiring to chase that dream anymore. I’d still like to be a singer/artiste if opportunities arise. But at this point in time, I just want to do what I can and want to. Think there are many aspects and factors to this which are hard to verbalize and organize as well.

Regarding the last 2 Questions –

For about 2 years now, I’ve picked up basketball again, playing consistently weekly. Meditation and spiritual practices that I’m learning and supposedly supposed to do every day. Learning more about the esoteric/occultist sciences, seeking to find the truth about life. I decided to take this course in psychotherapy because it felt like it was something that I could do. I didn’t want to seem just waste my life letting every day pass with not much purpose anymore. Now just taking all step by step, and having faith that all works out. Of course still having bouts of low energy, emotional/mental fatigue, stuck-ness. But deep down I know I can just be, and also keep moving forward.

Backstory: We are both enrolled in a school of positive psychology and we are both intending to pursue a career in this aspect as psychotherapists. Have never met except for zoom classes and had a number of interactions during the breakout rooms where we actually had to bear issues with each other
