WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT

The Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) is a member of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). It is also a National Sports Association (NSA) affiliated to the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) and Sport Singapore (SportSG).

STTA has been promoting the sport and developing world-class table tennis players in Singapore. As you are part of the administration team for STTA, you have to propose strategies to help STTA develop their capabilities and achieve their goals.

Your proposal should include:  

1. An evaluation of the THREE pillars that STTA has accomplished in the promotion and development of table tennis in Singapore.
2. A SWOT Analysis for STTA.
3. Strategies applying the Strategic Management Process (Johnson et. al, 2014) to help STTA with their multi-year sports plan, governance, and to secure NSA funding from SportSG.
4. An evaluation of STTA’s volunteer management.
5. An annual training plan and the administrative tasks that will help the table tennis players to get ready for the next Olympic Games in a year’s time.

The efforts and achievements that STTA has accomplished in the promotion and development of table tennis in Singapore based on the three pillars – Sports Participation, Sports Excellence, and Sports Industry.

SWOT Analysis

Identify at least TWO Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats each applying to STTA based on your evaluation of the three pillars and other research on STTA.

Strategic Management Process

Apply the tools and techniques of strategic management to discuss how the Strategic Management Process can help STTA in its multi-year sports plan, governance, and to secure NSA funding from SportSG.

• Strategy Analysis – use the SWOT Analysis to examine STTA’s strategic position
• Strategy Direction – choose any ONE of the tools (Mission Statement, Vision Statement, Organizational Objectives and Performance Measures) that applies to STTA
• Strategy Formulation – choose any ONE of the Generic Competitive Strategies (Cost Leadership, Differentiation, and Focus) that applies to STTA
• Strategy Implementation – elaborate on the plans or resource allocation for STTA to convert the Generic Competitive Strategy into action
• Strategy Evaluation – compare the results of the strategy with the KPIs of the organizational objectives

Volunteer Management

Apply the principles of effective volunteer management – Pre-recruitment, Recruitment, Retention, and Review, to evaluate the effort put in by STTA for their volunteer management. Support your points with an example for each principle.

Annual Training Plan (ATP)

Identify the international ranking of STTA. Based on the long-term athlete development program, discuss the requirements for the STTA players to qualify for the Olympic Games. Propose an ATP which includes fitness assessment, annual training phases, justifications for choosing the periodization of strength, endurance, and speed for training and design ONE fitness test for each periodization. Explain FIVE administrative tasks that STTA has to prepare before going for the Olympic Games.

Conclusion

Summarise how the recommendations can help STTA to develop their capabilities and achieve their goals.
