Question 1
Write an essay that discusses the current understanding and treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The essay will be assessed in five dimensions:
(a) Examine the defining features of MDD. The examination must include the following details:
(i) key symptoms,
(ii) prevalence across the world and in Singapore,
(iii) co-occurring psychological disorders,
(iv) gender and cultural related diagnostic issues.

(b) Perform a literature review to explain four (4) biological factors that are implicated in MDD. The analysis must demonstrate how genetics, neurochemical imbalance and abnormalities in brain structures are associated with the condition.  (20 marks)

(c) Review relevant academic journal articles to analyse four (4) environmental stressors that may cause MDD. This analysis must demonstrate how difficulties in coping with age-appropriate life demands may cause children, adolescents, adults and seniors to experience MDD.

(d) This question tests your ability to apply critical thinking to examine the implications of human behaviour for social work. Discuss four (4) implications of the analyses conducted in Part (b) and Part (c) for social workers. The discussion should include a review of the literature to justify that the implications are relevant and effective. (20 marks)

(e) The essay should be well organised and evidence-based. Its introductory paragraph should set the stage for discussion. The main arguments in the essay body must be supported with at least 10 journal articles, preferably published in the last 15 years. Finally, the essay should include a conclusion paragraph to summarise the analysed findings and present an overall argument on how best to care for persons with MDD. (20 marks)
