INTRODUCTION
St. Martin University (SMU) is one of the prominent universities in your home country. SMU (St. Martin University) produces outstanding graduates in different fields and industries, like Engineering, Maritime, Business and many more. Early this year they opened another course that is very timely and relevant to the demand of your home country, which is Travel and Tourism Management. The Hospitality and Tourism Department is headed by Miss Lisa Soberano, who is very passionate to produce good quality of Travel and Tourism graduates in the future.
Miss Lisa Soberano believes that knowledge is not only acquired through the four corners of the classroom, but also through experience. That is why she decided to conduct an overseas tour for their Travel and Tourism Management students. As she thinks it would help the students to understand and be familiarized with Travel and Tourism Industry.
Singapore is the destination chosen by Miss Lisa Soberano for the said event. Singapore is a blend of the old and the new when it comes to architecture. Around the city you will find olden temples and tall skyscrapers, both. The island city is also a blend of the Hong Kong wet markets, the street shopping of Mumbai, India, and Pat pong Bangkok. It is also a blend of east and west with Chinese, English, Malay, Tamil and Arab speaking population. A wonderful combination of modern city life and lots of greenery – it’s called the Garden City for a reason after all. This wondrous city has so much to offer to the students.
THE PROJECT
Miss Lisa Soberano designates your company (VL Travel and Tours Pte Ltd) to make this event possible. They are planning to have a 5 days tour in Singapore on 13-Dec-2019 to 17-Dec-2019, prior to the students’ Christmas break. There will be 50 students and 3 staffs who will be joining the said tour. The students are advised to pay the overall expenses of the said tour, while the staffs will be funded by the University administration.
In lieu with this, you are appointed to be the Project Manager for this event and as a PM of this project, you are tasked to present and develop a project plan from project conception until completion. TOOLS
PEST and SWOT analyses were undertaken in order to highlight issues from an early stage. (A PEST analysis looks at Political, Economic, Social and Technological factors. A SWOT analysis identifies the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats involved.) All stakeholders including the CEO, the Managing Director, the Senior Management Team and the employees were analysed using the tools. There was some familiarity with the approaches and the theory behind them but the project gave an opportunity to put the theory into a practical context. The project investigated elements of the organisation rather than looking at the sector as a whole. Careful consideration was given to what the organisation required of the industry and the project outcomes. The team needed to look at a minimum level at which requirements could be met to allow scalability for the future. During the pilot stage a significant amount of time was spent looking at processes and demands on technology. A business process project was undertaken alongside other related projects at the same time as the Interoperability Project.
