EPAE102 Documentation Project 1

This Documentation Project 1 carries a weightage of 20% of Coursework and is based on individual effort.

Topic:

 Properties of metals can be altered through several processes such as coldworking and heat treatment. It is therefore important to determine the properties of these metals to ensure structural integrity when designing and repairing structural components.

Write a research report about the common metal properties as well as the various hardness and impact tests used in the industry to determine these properties.

In this report, you should focus on and describe the following THREE hardness tests: (1) Brinell, (2) Rockwell and (3) Vickers and the TWO impact tests: (1) Izod and (2) Charpy.

In your report, you should also compare the key differences among the THREE hardness tests and between the TWO impact tests. In addition, you should discuss the advantages and disadvantages of EACH test as well.

 Documentation Project Format: 

The following is a description of format for your report. It should comprise of the following:

Cover Page. The report begins with a cover page stating clearly the student’s name, admission no., class grouping and report title: Common Hardness and Impact Tests.

Synopsis. A synopsis is included to give a brief summary of the report.

Table of Contents. This list is to provide a breakdown of the entire content found in the report with the corresponding page number associated with each content.

Introduction. This is to provide background information required for the reader to understand the report.

Body. The body of the report should focus on the following topics:

1. Description of Brinell, Rockwell and Vickers Hardness Tests
2. Key Differences among the THREE Hardness Tests
3. Advantages & Disadvantages of EACH Hardness Test
4. Description of Izod and Charpy Impact Tests
5. Key Differences between the TWO Impact Tests
6. Advantages & Disadvantages of EACH Impact Test 

Conclusion. Analyse and summarise, as appropriate, the key findings/points of your report.
