| Subject | BM5004: Business Statistics |
Learning Outcomes
After the completion of this assignment, learners will be able to:
1. Perform descriptive statistics on real-life data using MS Excel Data Analysis Tool Pak.
2. Analyze real-life data using the descriptive statistics generated to uncover trends among groups and/or across time.
3. Solve problems using the continuous probability distribution techniques.
Requirements
Descriptive Statistics
1. Download and save 2 datasets in MS Excel format from the Department of Statistics, Singapore website, SingStat Table Builder. The data may be on Singapore’s economy, industry, trade & investment, population, households, or society. The datasets downloaded do not need to be complicated. You may want to select datasets that are of interest to you and/or your work and ensure that the datasets are sufficient for you to perform descriptive statistics, uncover and compare interesting trends among groups (e.g. people-groups, age-groups, industry-groups) and/or across time (e.g. in the 1980s vis-à-vis 2010s).

2. Perform descriptive statistics on real-life data using MS Excel Data Analysis Tool Pak. Refer to the detailed illustration and instructions on how to perform descriptive statistics using MS Excel Data Analysis Tool Pak from the video below. Save the output of the descriptive statistics on the same worksheet as your raw data.
3. Analyze the 2 datasets using the descriptive statistics generated (central the tendency, dispersion, and skewness) to uncover and compare interesting trends among groups (e.g. of people, age-groups, industry-groups) and/or across time for a single group (e.g. in the 1980s vis-à-vis 2010s).
4. Prepare a written report on your analysis and findings.
Continuous Probability Distribution
1. Each class is randomly selected to solve any (1) of the following 3 continuous probability distribution cases.
a) The speed of vehicles that travel along PIE is normally distributed with a mean of 90 km/h and a standard deviation of 9 km/h.<DBP(Accounting) Class 1>
b) The height of a population of individuals is normally distributed with a mean 160 cm and a standard deviation of 12 cm. <DBP(Accounting) Class 2>
c) The weight of a population of individuals is normally distributed with a mean 65 kg and a standard deviation of 11 kg. <DBP(HTM)>
2. Based on your cases, solve the following problems using the continuous probability distribution techniques.
a) State the mean, standard deviation, and variance of the population.
b) Describe how the normal curve will look when the mean decreases and the standard deviation increases.
c) Calculate the amount for the top and bottom kth percentage of the population, where k is your registration number in your class register.
3. Write down your answers with appropriate workings and illustrations of diagrams in your report.
