Introduction
The main aim of the airport systems is to support the 5 key elements of airport operations namely airport capacity, operational efficiency, aviation security/safety, customer service, and financial sustainability. The main objective of this project is to give each student the opportunity to better appreciate how various airport systems could enhance the key elements of airport operations and understand how to plan for their introduction in a new airport or for the expansion of an existing airport.
It also provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate how the various airport systems with the incorporation of some existing breakthrough technologies such as information technology, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, biometric technology, and artificial intelligence technology, etc. could further enhance the seamlessness of air travel in future.

Project Description
Balipatana Airport is experiencing rapid traffic growth and is planning to build a new airport with a single passenger terminal. The concept layout plan of the Terminal is shown below. The size and dimensions of the Terminal are to be determined based on the recommended proposal.
You are required to give your proposal with good justification on the following airport systems/facilities required for the new airport Terminal using the following parameters.
- Airport passenger capacity: 20 million passenger movements per annum (20 mppa)
- Hourly peak departure passenger capacity: 3,000
- Hourly peak arrival passenger capacity: 2,500
- Annual aircraft movements: 80,000
- Hourly peak aircraft movements: 30 • Hourly peak departure movements: 20
- Hourly peak arrival movements: 16
- Historical baggage/passenger ratio: 1.4/1
- Expected Number of operating airlines: 20
- Expected main aircraft types: 8747 (10%), 8777 (20%), B787 (20%), 8737 (15%), A350 (10%), A340 (10%), A320 (10%), ATR72 (5%)
- Expected passenger profile: young travelers (50%)
Part 1: Passenger Check-in System (PCS1
- Describe briefly the advantages of each type of check-in facilities including manual counters, self-service kiosks, etc.
- Describe briefly the advantages and disadvantages of each type of check-in facility layouts such as linear, island, and flow-through layout.
- Describe briefly the advantages and disadvantages of each concept of a check-in including the common check-in (CCI) concept, dedicated check-in (DCI) concept, or a combination of both.
- Provide your recommendations and their rationales on the following: o Proposed type(s) of check-in facilities o Proposed concept(s) of check-in o Proposed layout(s) of check-in facilities o Proposed number of each type of check-in facilities (manual counters, self-service kiosks, bag drop, etc.)
Part 2: Baggage Handling System (BHSI
- Describe briefly each type of BHS including manual, semi-automated, and fully automated BHS.
- Provide your recommendations and their rationales on the following:
- Proposed type of BHS (manual, semi-automated, or fully automated sortation system)
- Number of race-track conveyors proposed at the Baggage Make-up area (departure)
- Proposed number of inline security screening machines needed, if applicable,
- Proposed number of baggage reclaim conveyors at the Baggage Break-down area (arrival)
- Provide a schematic diagram showing how the bags flow from the check-in area through the various BHS components including inline security screening machines (if applicable), sortation system, and finally the make-up conveyors.
Part 3: Passenger Loading Bridge (PLB)
- Describe briefly the advantages and disadvantages of each type of PLB, namely pedestal and apron drive PLB.
- Provide your recommendation on the number of each type of PLB proposed and reasons for your proposal (It is assumed that each PLB can handle about 0.5 million passenger movements per annum (mppa)).
Part 4: Automated People Mover System (APMS)
- Describe briefly the benefits of APMS.
- Provide your recommendation on the need for an APMS and the reasons for your recommendation.
Part 5: Seamless Travel (FAST)
Make observations on Changi Airport’s operations, evaluate and propose how the travel through Balipatana Airport could be made seamless when incorporating certain technologies such as information technology, biometric technology, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, and artificial intelligence (Al) technology, etc. where applicable.
You are to describe a scenario of your proposed seamless departure processes including check-in, bag drop, immigration clearance, security screening, and boarding (conducted without human intervention and yet fulfill all the functionalities and requirements at each departure process).
