      EAC3027-N Assignment Brief

This assessment is primarily based on a laboratory experiment, with associated software simulation and manual calculation aspects. All information required for completion has been provided or has been covered in module laboratory sessions.

You will be expected to perform independent research and further study as appropriate to aid completion.

You should write a report based on the requirements of the attached brief and this should be an individual submission. This assessment counts for 30% of the total module marks.

      Module Learning Outcomes Assessed

      Knowledge & Understanding

      1. Demonstrate a comprehensive and detailed knowledge of key aspects of high voltage generation and control in electrical power systems.

      Cognitive & Intellectual Skills

      2. Critically analyse and evaluate power system problems with respect to generation, economic dispatch, frequency/voltage control and stability.

      3. Identify and define complex electrical power systems problems and apply appropriate knowledge and tools to their solution.

      Practical & Professional Skills

      4. Operate ethically in situations of varying complexity and predictability requiring the analysis of the power system components and system-wide issues.

      Key Transferable Skills

      5. Select and apply appropriate numerical methods to power systems problems.

      6. Select and apply appropriate software to aid analysis of electrical power systems

      Structure of the Report

The report should adhere to the following guidance:

The report should have a title page, abstract and a contents page, and each page should be numbered. The report should then follow a recognised structure and be a maximum of 20 pages long including equations, figures, illustrations and tables.

One additional page may be used to list references – which should follow a recognised standard.

Figures and tables should be numbered and should have a caption describing the figure/table. The caption should also indicate the primary feature that should be observed by viewing the figure/table. Figures should also be neat and of a readable size.

Brevity is commendable. Appendices should be used for additional information such as extracts from data sheets. It is important that the report be readable and understandable without reference to the appendices.

If any parts of the exercise are unclear, please ask the module team for clarification

      Background Information

A Distribution Network Operator with significant underground cable assets is reviewing their processes when assessing asset health and diagnosing permanent or developing faults. This is in line with new business practices which aim to consider sustainability of existing cables and the impact to the environment and local population when major renewal or intervention works are completed. To assist the DNO in developing their processes you are required to undertake the following activities which aim to compare a potentially faulted cable with data derived from manual calculations and simulation models.

Task 1 – Star Connected Load

Using the LN equipment in IC0.47 build a suitable circuit, which includes the 37.5km underground cable module, the three-phase inductive load module and the three-phase resistive load module connected in Star configuration. Include Power Quality Meters to allow for measurements to be taken at the sending and receiving end of the line.

The supply voltage from the bench mounted power supply should be 130V phase to neutral as measured at the sending end.

Without the circuit connected to the supply, adjust the resistor bank to a suitable value so that the load current will be greater than 0.25A but will not exceed 0.5A, with both R and L connected in series. The inductor module should be connected across the full range of values available, and the experiment repeated as appropriate. Both resistance and inductance values are per phase. Note the internal resistance of the inductors is approximately 27Ω and this should be included in calculations as appropriate.

Take appropriate measurements at the sending and receiving ends, of Voltage, Current, Apparent Power, Real Power, Reactive Power and Power Factor.

Calculate and simulate the optimum values of capacitance to achieve a power factor which would be acceptable to an industrial consumer.

      Task 2 – Analysis

      a. Using appropriate software packages and manual calculations (excel),
confirm or otherwise the results recorded in Task 1. It is important that the comparison of these results is analysed within the final report. Is the cable faulty?

      b. Can you identify any relationships, and can these be shown graphically?

      c. From the practical results can you comment on the characteristics of the cable, specifically the true and reactive power, and is this dependent on length and cable construction?

      d. If the load was increased how might this effect the voltage? And what factors are significant when considering power flow?

      e. How could this method be used to inform the sustainability aspirations of the DNO when considering their underground cable assets?

      f. When completing civil engineering works to access or install underground cables how might an electrical engineering professional consider the statement of ethical principle to guide their work? Engineering Council – Statement of Ethical Principles. How would the guidance impact any practical inspection work relevant to the case study in this ICA?
