Assignment Details:
You will submit a 3000-word report based on critical, evaluative and reflective notes on a type of early years setting you have investigated, focusing on one or more aspects of provision you have investigated. The report shall be titled: “Approaches to the care and education of young children: critical and reflective notes on a specific type of early years provision.” Writing of this report will be informed by your independent desk-based (secondary) research into a type of early years education and childcare setting.
This activity will be supported through reference to a workbook, which will provide suggested prompts, questions, and tasks to guide your research, analysis, and evaluation of your chosen type of setting. Report Guidance Using the data that you have collected during your desk-based research of a particular type of setting providing early years education and care, produce a report which demonstrates your understanding of one or more aspects of this type of setting and which also contrasts this with the alternative approaches to improving the care and education of young children you have read about. Section / suggested word count.
Suggested content Part 1 (~1200 words)
Describe and critically discuss the type of setting or service. You might choose to focus on:
- One or more of the policies of the setting.
- The way Play, Learning, and Development is characterized and presented in the material you have researched – relating this to the EYFS.
- The nature of professional practice in that type of setting or service (including any inter-professional and multi-agency working).
Part 2 (~1,500 words)
Characterize and consider existing and possible alternative approaches in that type of setting. Considering the results of and reflections on your desk-based research, you will characterize the approach(es) typically used in this setting or service. You may find it helpful to think about the concept of “pedagogy” in this context and consider what ‘type’ of pedagogy you consider to be explicit or implicit in what you have seen.
Then consider the potential effect of implementing one of the ‘approaches’ to young children’s learning you have studied on this module and any associated issues and benefits to children, practitioners and parents/carers.
Choose an approach from The Reggio approach; The Montessori approach; The High Scope approach; The Steiner approach; The Te Whariki approach, and the “Forest School” approach. Part 3 (~300 words) Recommend future developments based on your critical reflections. Make recommendations for future developments based on the data you have collected.
